The 12th China Modern Agricultural Development Forum and the 2025 Annual Meeting of the China Association of Agricultural Science Societies (CAASS) were recently held in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. Zhang Xingwang, Vice Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and President of CAASS, delivered an opening address; Ren Shaobo, Party Secretary of Zhejiang University, and Li Yingbin, Director of the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, also attended and spoke. Over 310 experts, including 11 academicians, were invited to present reports. The event drew more than 2,000 participants, including officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the China Association for Science and Technology, and relevant national societies; CAASS council members and representatives from its branches and provincial societies; representatives from agricultural universities, research institutes, and technology enterprises; and young sci-tech professionals. Zhang Peng, Co-founder and General Manager of Qingdao VitalTech Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd., was invited to attend and delivered a presentation on the systematic application of smart agricultural machinery in fruit tree production.
In his address, Vice Minister Zhang Xingwang noted that the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs is resolutely implementing the decisions and plans of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council. By prioritizing agricultural sci-tech innovation and vigorously executing key tasks, the Ministry has achieved significant interim results. Chen Jianping, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a professor at Ningbo University, stated that AI can empower the entire process of pest and disease control—through intelligent monitoring, precision early warning, and data-driven decision-making—thereby enhancing timeliness and accuracy, reducing reliance on pesticides, and fostering green, sustainable development. Yu Jingquan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a professor at Zhejiang University, highlighted the challenges facing agriculture, such as frequent disasters, soil degradation, and labor shortages. He proposed that the industry's future focus should be on replacing manual labor with machines, ensuring green safety, and leveraging digital empowerment; he advocated for simplifying technologies and refining products to support high-quality development.
This forum and annual meeting served as an academic feast for the agricultural sci-tech sector and a vivid demonstration of implementing the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s congratulatory letter marking the centenary of the China Association of Agricultural Science Societies.
